Have your kids jumped into the slime wave? Hazel discovered slime a few weeks ago when one of her classmates was looking for some buyers of slime her older sister made. This was right after I had heard about the blisters and burns some kids experienced, so I decided the only way she was having slime was if we made it so I knew exactly what was in it. Enter Leisure Arts. They just published a new book called Slimed DIY.

Slimer

This book has ten different slimes to make. It suggests starting with the basic recipe which is what we did. Now our first try was a failure. This is because I did not understand the difference between spray starch and liquid starch.
All I could find at local stores was spray starch, so I figured we could try it. Well apparently it is not concentrated enough and it does not work. We finally found some liquid starch on-line (we ordered it from Walmart with free store delivery and picked it up at our local store).

The basic recipe called for white glue, liquid starch and food coloring and water. Hazel wanted to make it pink so we used red food coloring and she enjoyed making it as well as playing with it. She was bitten by the slime bug and kept on making more kinds.

Next she wanted to make the clear slime. This requires the very hard to find clear glue. We found some at Michael's but had a hard time finding it. Apparently it would be more clear if we used Borax, but I refused to let her because of all the warnings out there as well as her very sensitive skin.

We did find that it separated a bit overnight. We haven't tried to remix it yet though since we discovered it separated at my parents house without our supplies.

Next we explored the glitter glue slime. We had two different kinds of glitter glue to try. We did have trouble with one of them. We found the Elmer's one easier to work with. The gold glitter glue was a thicker and more glitter than glue and it ran into trouble with the consistency of the slime. We kept adding things to try to get it correct.
We did find the gold glitter slime was a bit messier especially the next day. It never quite solidified as well as the others. You can see the residue on her other hand in the photo below.

The pink glitter slime however was her favorite. She has done so much with this one!!

She brought it to my parents and got very creative with it. She loved how it stretched to almost a glasslike look.
She also molded it like it was clay or play dough. She made a pink glitter pizza.

She also made a mermaid (with a bikini top).

The book says to throw it away after a week, so she has a few more days to play and then we are going to try some of the other types. I think our next one will be the fluffy slime, but the book also has recipes for gold, color changing, magnetic, starry night, glitter, and winter.

Slimer

We have been having fun with the slime. Hazel also says the best part is making it herself. She is glad she didn't buy it from her friend. We can say Slimed DIY has easy to follow recipes and makes the entire process fun and easy. So if you are looking for some easy and safe recipes for slime, check it out!!
